Time

Time. Do you have too much of it or not enough of it?

When I was younger, I had all the time in the world. Life was full of possibilities and all I wanted to do was enter the world and make life happen. Thirteen years after initially entering adulthood, I am left to wonder where the time went. When did I become the old lady? The person not up on her current trends. The one to complain about derogatory lyrics in a song? Yet, this is what time has brought me. That and a head full of  pre-maturing gray and thinning hair.

When we are children we have no concept of time. We live, we laugh, we play, we enjoy, and discover our world. We learn from trial and error. We lead by the examples that were set for us by our parents. Life seems so long and time exists forever. Eventually, we wake up one day and realize that time has gotten the upper hand on us. We are 18. We are adults. We can vote. We can make our own way. Of course, time doesn’t stop here. We just think it does.

As time continues, we enter out 20’s. We think we have finally got life figured out. We think we finally have it together. Only to find out that most of us do not. There is still so much time. What do I do with it? Do I travel? Do I write? Do I work? Do I start a family? If you are like me, you take the time and go back to school. You never want to stop learning because you figure it will only benefit you in the future. Then comes the dreaded 30’s. This is where most people want to freeze time because it all feels downhill from here. That killer body you had in your teens and 20’s is starting to disappear. You have to work twice as hard to maintain a figure that you find satisfactory. By now, you have a job and hardly any time for fun. You start to have aches and pains in places that you never had before. To put in plainly, you begin to slowly morph into your parents and you never even saw it coming.

Time is both long and short. It is all dependent upon where you are in your life. I cannot speak beyond my 30 something years of life. It is a mystery as to what time will bring me over the next 30 something years and possibly more. So now instead of rushing time or trying to slow it down, I live within the confines of time. I take each day as it comes. Enjoy each sunrise and sunset. I take pleasure in the familiar faces of friends and family. Time is not ours. This is why we must live each day to the fullest and cease to dwell on the errors of the past or the present.

How do you feel about the time you’ve used and the time you have left?

  1. VERY well said! I have wasted way too much time in my life, and even after cancer (when I thought I had learned my lesson about holding life as precious and making the most of it, not wasting it). However, now that I have started blogging, I have more focus and have found enormous satisfaction. That to me seems to slow down the clock a little – doing something you love. I think you have a good idea about taking life a day at a time and appreciating each for what it is.
